What is VitalStim® Therapy?

VitalStim® Therapy is a non-invasive, painless therapy that uses a combination of electrical stimulation and swallowing exercises to gain the muscle strength to swallow properly. Patients receive electrical stimulation through electrodes attached to the skin on the neck or cheeks. While the facial muscles are being triggered by the electrodes, swallowing exercises are performed. This strengthens and re-educates the muscles to be more in control of their swallowing mechanism, increasing a patient’s ability to manipulate food and swallow safely.

Therapy sessions can last up to one hour, depending on the needs of the patient.

At TIC, we have seen great success with VitalStim®. Patients who came to us on a diet restricted to bottle foods are now able to chew solid foods, use their tongue and close their lips to prevent drooling.

Can My Child Benefit from VitalStim® Therapy?

People who have difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) and chewing caused by neurological disorders or muscle fatigue/weakness can be treated with VitalStim® Therapy.

What is Dysphagia?

A person has dysphagia when he or she has difficulty swallowing. Not being able to swallow properly can lead to difficulty eating and drinking and aspiration. Aspiration occurs when you breathe objects into your airway and lungs, such as food, drink and saliva. Liquid and food in the lungs can cause trouble breathing, couching and pneumonia.
